I had one like that a 1963 5hp, 24" Ariens. Looks like yours has been repowered.

Great machine, front 1/2 of the auger was completely exposed. Had to grab the clutch to stop it. PTO was on the side of the frame. Machine really ate its way into the snow and was a real pleasure to use compared to the 'idiot proof' machines they make today.

Nice to see one of the old girls still dancin'

How much of a difference do the exposed augers make, for chewing into dense snowbanks?

It seems like that would be really helpful, the first thing to arrive would already be breaking up the snow. But maybe they aren't much better, I don't know.
