Hello.
I have an older 8hp briggs that ran fine last year but will not run this year. I have.cleaned the.carb(which was spotless when I took it apart) and added fresh fuel. It has points and and condenser, so the first thing I did was pulled the flywheel and take a emeryboard nail file to cleanup the points. Seems to have good spark, but I cannot get her to run. Jets are set at 1.5-2 turns out. Sometimes it pops off with starting fluid...other times I just pull the cord until I am tired.

Any help.would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to try two things; first change spark plug and put a bit of gas in spark plug hole to see if she runs a bit. Good Luck

Oh I forgot have replaced the plug a couple times.

One thing I did notice when it wanna fire up was that as I let go of the pull cord it wanted to or seemed to jerk the pull cord handle it in towards the recoil. One time it pulled the rubber handle right from my hand.

Hello and welcome to the forum artbob. Are you sure the flywheel key wasn't partially sheared when you removed the flywheel? Also, if you did not correctly torque the flywheel nut after reassembly, you may now have sheared the key and the ignition timing is off and causing the rope pull back.

The key and keyway are fine, or atleast to me seem fine. . . I removed flywheel a second time just to recheck everything when it did not start right up like in the YouTube videos people post... ;-)

check the petcock in the bottom of the fuel tank, they get plugged and don't deliver the gas. check the fuel filter, and fuel line. remove these parts and look at them CLOSELY like a scientist.

remove the carb, take it completely apart, and take a very close look at the long main jet/nozzle that threads into the bottom of that carb. there are tiny holes in the nozzle and jet that if blocked, it won't run.

soak it in gasoline, lacquer thinner, and mineral spirits mix 1-1-1 for a day or two. blow out all the passages with high pressure compressed air, and poke all those little passages out with a needle or pin or tiny torch tip cleaner.

check the plug for spark if it's laying on the engine, if it sparks, you have spark. move on. see if you have fuel. open the choke, open the throttle wide, and spray starter fluid into the intake tract through the carb. quickly close the choke, put throttle back to 1/2 open, and pull the cord.

if it runs on ether and then stalls, you have a fuel problem. if it still doesn't run on ether, change the points/condenser out for a Nova II electronic ignition. they are only $12 and attach with 2 wires. remove the point/condenser completely.

if it still had problems, pull the head and look at the valves. if they open/close ok and look like they are good, then look at the coil. try a known good coil from another engine.

make sure that teeth didn't break on the cam and it jumped valve timing on you. pull the side covers and take a look. you may also want to do a compression test.

eventually you'll find what's wrong

Briggs that pull the starter rope out of your hand and do that, have typically jumped time, or the compression release is not working. there is a little bump on the cam that operates compression release, if it doesn't work then it will rip the cord from your hand like that. I have a pressure washer with that trait.

Do you think I could just remove the motor and replace it with a honda gx340? A while back I picked up a pressure washer with a broken pump and a gx340. Would anyone know if the honda's output shaft would be at the same height as the old 8hp briggs? I just don't know how much time and money I wanna soak into the 32 year old Briggs 8hp engine.

Since you have both motors, it would be easy to measure the shaft lengths and diameters along with the mounting hole dimensions. If the base to shaft dimension is shorter on the Honda, you could add spacers to raise it up. If the Honda is taller, you could get longer belts.

The most important item is if the Briggs has a cam shaft pulley that drives the tractor section or just a single shaft.
