Can someone tell me why the auger on my snowblower turns without me engaging it? I'm not sure if I have the belts backwards or not.

Almost certainly the belt is too tight or the engagemant is really misadjusted. Did it just start doing it or have you done some r ecent work on it?

and here's another possibility- the New Holland/Gilson Unitrol I have, did the same thing because the bottom of the tractor unit was filled with acorns from a chipmunk or mouse....and that debris was pushing UP on the belt engaging it, even with the auger idler perfectly disengaged.

pull the bottom off the machine, make sure there's no stuff in there doing the same to that one

I just picked up 2 eager 1's and they have a brake that rubs the auger drive pulley when disengaged ....actually on one of mine its missing and I'm trying to track it down now.
