Help... my niece asked me to help out a friend.. asked if I could take a look at his like new 28", 208cc snowblower which he had not started I a couple years.
I've been doing all manners and size of engines for 50 years. so sure thing bring it over no problemo.

Removed carb, yes dirty inside with dried residue, both jets gunked up, cleaned real good, but really, this thing looks like under 20 hours... even the impeller blades are still all yellow.....
Drained the fuel tank, looks good but still, replaced with fresh.
Pulled spark plug, looks almost like new, gap is correct.
Ran compression test, since it had been sitting, 4 or 5 cranks gives me 125 PSI.
Spark plug grounds to case, crank it over and sparks big time.
Reinstalled carb and plug, OK SO all ready to pat myself on the back...... and
It cranks and it cranks, and it cranks...and it cranks.... BUT not even a hint of starting..
No exhaust odor, no carb backfire deader than dead,,,,
OK,,, pull carb, crank with some spray bottle of fuel - nadda nothing.
Left plug in but pulled high tension lead and attached to another plug, yes still sparking..
Replaced with that plug, still nadda.

What the heck?
Ideas? Can these engines jump time?

Ideas guys???

Its supposed to snow this Saturday :)

Welcome back

Have you tried to use a little starting fluid to see if it will run for a couple seconds ?

When you had the carb off did you clean the needle seat area? Any chance the needle is stuck/gummed closed and not allowing gas into the carb bowl ?

is the intake valve moving? even if it jumped time it should still ignite the fuel you sprayed in the intake even if it was at the wrong time. might have to take the valve cover off to make sure the valves are adjusted correctly and the rocker arms are where they should be.

You have the same thought I have...

Yes, I took off the rocker cover and saw the rockers a rocking..
But that is also on my checklist to go back and make sure that the valves are following them.

Its single digits here after dark.. I have a Mr Heater in the garage but still.
This old man gets chilly.

Thanks guys.

Yup, covered the three bases, fuel, compression, and spark.
Carb was not that bad.
Engine has good vacuum to the carb, I put my thumb over the intake when the carb was off and cranked it.
I have a mister bottle with gas and also sprayed some starting fluid.
What gets me is I cant even get a pop, ........going to change the plug tomorrow in case this one is breaking down under compression.

Then do it all over the 3rd time....

Totally stumped..

it is possible the plug might be bad. i have had a few that sparked fine outside the engine but would not run when you put it in the engine. i changed the plug and it was fine after that. you can try making the plug gap smaller. that will sometimes get you that pop you want so you can verify the plug is bad.

I seen many plugs do that in my years...
Ill run out to Farm & Fleet in the AM for a plug.

These valves are like every other small engine, direct gear driven cam and pushrods..so they have to be in time, unless something breaks, but then my rockers would not be moving.. Fixed a rider lawnmower that had a sheared camshaft last summer.

Ignition is also fixed... either sparks or no sparks..
Still scratched my head for 2 hours.......

Oh well

We'll see
Thanks again

ya it is one of those issue that is difficult to trouble shoot. the first time i had it happen i didn't even have the right plug for the machine but had one that was similar and i and gave it a shot and luckily it worked. the even funnier parts is i had the same thing happened to a machine i serviced in the summer after that. ran just fine in the summer but once we got snow the plug was bad even tho spark looked good. started keeping a few extra plugs around after that because of it.
