Hello all,

First time posting. I just discovered this site a few days ago and have spent some time searching through threads and the sticky threads. As a researcher type and a forum lover...this site is great! Thanks!

I'm looking to purchase a snowblower for the first time. A few details about me and my situation...

I live in metro Detroit where it averages 36 days of snow per year and 42 inches of snow per year. We get on average 13 days per year of at least 1 inch of snow, on average 4 days per year of at least 3 inches, on average 2 days per year of at least 5 inches, and on average less than one day per year of 10 inches. The consistency of the snow varies from dry to wet.

My driveway is flat, has single car width for maybe 3 lengths of cars, and double car width for 2 lengths of cars. One walkway to front door.

I'm 39 years old but would like a snowblower that my wife can use as well...and she's a bit nervous about needing to handle a big machine (unless I can reassure her that it's very doable).

I would like to store the snowblower in the garage and there is not a lot of space. So I think a 24" model would be appropriate and anything larger than that might not work well from a storage standpoint.

I typically like to buy gently used things and get, what I perceive to be, good value. However, in my search for good, slightly used snowblowers my concern is 1) I don't think the manufacturer's warranty extends beyond the original owner, and 2) I'm not sure I'm seeing enough of a reduction in price over new to justify the increased risk of buying used.

I think I know that a great 2 stage snowblower could be overkill for the vast majority of my needs...but then again, on the days you really need it, and dealing with the EOD pileups, it would be much preferred over a smaller machine.

So, what have I been considering?

-Ariens 24" Compact
-Ariens 24" Deluxe
-Toro Snowmaster 824 QXE
-Toro Snowmaster 724 QXE
-Briefly considering a Toro Power Max

Between those, I seem to be deciding between the Ariens 24" Deluxe and the Toro Snowmaster 824 QXE. Should I be considering others?

Experts of this world, what say you? What do you think would be best for me and my situation? Thanks in advance!

Bumping this thread for any advice...

Here's a few local craigslist options I can consider...

-Ariens 921024 (24" Deluxe) for $750...looks to be in good condition
-another Ariens 24" Deluxe...says used only 3 times...for $900.
-Ariens Compact 24"...says used twice...for $750
-Toro Snowmaster 724 QXE...says bought last year, only used a few times...for $395
-Toro Powermax 928 OE...says used 5 or 6 times...for $850

I'm going to head out to a dealer today to talk further about new options.

Thanks!

i would go with the toro 928 powermax. these are beast machines that love both wet and dry . never hurts to have more then needed, for that one snow a year that bogs down a smaller machine.esp. where you live when one storm is dry the next wet. never know what's coming off the lakes before they freeze over.

42 inches of snow sounds like a shovel or just drive over.

we had over 48 inches of snow in a 2 day period here last winter. over 500 for the season . over 700 on the Donner Summit.

Can't go wrong with any of those machines for your situation. Like others said it doesn't hurt to have more machine that you need. I have a Toro 826OXE HD and love it.
