BTW welcome to SBF, glad to have you aboard.

It's likely that the internals of the muffler have rotted, even though the outside looks intact.
Thanks for the tip. The muffler was cracked in the back, where the screws protrude. Is there a some sort of gasket that goes between the engine and the muffler? I did not notice anything on the muffler or engine block.

Some of the older small engines had an exhaust gasket, but most are just sealed against the block.

I recently bought a new muffler and gasket for the HM 80 on my 1974 Ariens.

This is a Canadian supplier, but Amazon, E bay etc should carry them.
