Ariens EFI problem

Purchase an Ariens deluxe 30 EFI (921049) a few years ago - used it a handful of times 4-5 hours total. Went to start it this year and wouldn’t start. Charged the battery, replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump as that wasn’t turning on when we turned the key. Turned it on and pulled once, machine started up and only ran for a few seconds - big cloud of black smoke. Will not run now however starts for a second. Checked voltage on fuel injector as well as ECU - all good. We’re at a loss as we spent good money on this machine and now it seems to have **** the bed.

Anyone else have this issue or have an idea of what this could be? Purchase EFI so we didn’t have to deal with non-starting and here we are.

Well, you can't leave ANYTHING sitting for long periods and then just expect it to start. The best practice is to start it every 3 months or so and run it for a few minutes until it warms up.

The deluxe 30 efi is a giant p.o.s. I've had one for a few years, and doesn't matter how "fresh the fuel is" stabilized always ethanol free and if its not started once every week or so the thing just wont start and no fuel pump noises, fuel injectors always check out good, battery's charged, put a new fuel pump in it and bang, one pull starts up. Even the new "updated" fuel pump from ariens does not fix the problem. Not sure what the long term fix is but if you don't catch the problem in 90 day's there is no warranty on the parts after that. Pretty sure Ariens knows the machines are junk and that's why the parts warranties are junk so they can keep scamming you out of money every time the fuel pump goes.

Had the same problem the second season I owned my Ariens EFI. Listen really closely when you turn the key on. You should hear the fuel pump kicking on. If not, there is an easy fix. You have to remove the motor covers and get to the pump under the fuel tank. Carefully remove the electrical leads from the motor and note which one was positive and which one was negative. For the last part you need a 12VDC battery and some jumper wires. Connect the jumpers to the 12V battery terminals and carefully (keeping them separated) touch the leads to the fuel pump terminals (matching + to + and - to -). You should hear the pump buzz and pump up as normal. The pump motor should spin and act normally; do this a few times to make sure its good. Then put it all back the way you found it. Should work for quite some time. This 12V jump start worked for me; after I was going for my second EFI pump; I tried this and didn't need the second pump at all. In fact the first one I replaced was actually still good. Cheers!!!

I have the Ariens EFI 30 Deluxe. I finally got it started, it's 3 years old and has had issues every year. I replaced the battery and fuel pump and it started right up with old gas in it. Now that I fixed it, I think I know what the problem was. The crappy battery charger wasn't charging the battery. I could have easily solved the problem by getting an NIMH charger on Amazon. But, a battery, charger, fuel pump, control board, all that done and it works now 🤷‍♂️

Start with the battery and charger. Amazon has a 7.2v 3600 mah battery for $19. A good charger for $21.

My recommendation and what I have done twice now is to pull the wires off the fuel pump and very carefully jump the terminals to 12V DC from a automotive battery. The pump will fire up and spin you can hear it buzzing. Then re-assemble everything the way it was built from the factory. It should work after that bump start. I believe that the motor windings are not sufficient to run on 7.5V DC even though it works most of the time. It finds a "flat spot" in the windings and can't spin with the lower input voltage. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Mine is a 2022 Ariens 30 EFI Deluxe. It's new and has never had fuel in the tank. I connected the fully charged battery, filled the tank with fuel turned the key to on I heard the fuel pump for about a half second turn over. I pulled and pulled but it wouldn't start. The electric start wasn't any help. Below the battery there's a board with a green and red light. I turned the key on and waited about 10 seconds, the red light would flash two times then pause then flash seven times straight. That's code 26 for low fuel pressure. So I used two leads with alligator clips connected to the fuel pumps positive and negative terminals. I used a Noco GB40 to bump start the pump. I yelled clear, bumped it and it was alive. I bumped it a few times until a little fuel ran out of the carburetor. Reassembled everything and it started on the first pull. Just in time for its first 6" snow today.

I don't have the Ariens EFI but I have a EFI (gas) tractor and occasionally use an OTC product called "Inject-R Kleen". Its a solvent that is pressure fed (completely replacing the gasoline) with the engine running and cleans out injector internals. You could probably add to the tank either straight up or cut with gas. The engine runs a bit rough when running full strength, so need to replace with gas for operation. Apparently the product is recently discontinued but you can still find it if you look around. Its actually 98% Xylene, so you could probably use that too; but use with care, as its nasty stuff.

NOTE: You might want to thin out the solvent with gas, as it must pass through the fuel pump on the Ariens without harm. In my use on the Tractor I am bypassing the fuel pump, using a pressurized feed system.
