Just wondering from the informed masses....has anyone experienced oil usage on the Ariens AX LCT Engines?
I just topped mine up about 1 running hour ago, and checked it now.
It seems a tiny bit down form where it was. It's brand new. Just wondering if this is normal?
Or maybe I didn't have it up as far as I thought. The dipstick goes in at an angle into the 291 CC engine.
Hard to tell.

I don't have experience with LCT engines but did you check the oil level both times with the machine in the same location and position? If the dipstick goes in at an angle the reading can be skewed if the engine is in a slightly different position.


Also,if running synthetic oil after the initial break-in (4hours or whatever) may not allow the rings to fully seat. The 4 hour break in oil change is mainly to get the metal particles and presumably assembly lube flushed out, engine aren't fully broken in for many more hours. According to Kohler for example, they recommend waiting to 50 hours before changing to synth. oil.
The Predator (Harbor Freight) engine owner's manual for the 212cc model says the "operational break in" is about 3 hours during which not to apply excessive loads and not to run at full speed, then it says the "maintenance break-in" lasts about 20 hours after which change the oil. Point is it takes time to break it in.


There is the off-chance that the engine was build slightly out of tolerance with regards to the cylinder or rings. Best bet is to top it off to the mark, then use it to see if it drops enough to be certain that it did actually use some.

Rings should still seat with synthetic, it just might be a little harder to get them seated. Once an engine has some initial break in, it needs to be worked hard (not necessarily high rpm, but at least 1/2 throttle or more) to get the rings seated well.

Those dipsticks are kinda annoying for reading the level.

The case is designed to be filled to the top of the threads just before dribbling out.

Pick a nice level spot in your garage or driveway and use it as your spot.

As far as break in goes, work it hard. It takes combustion pressure to expand the rings against the cylinder and wear nicely into place.

Whether an oil slinger is in the sump oil or not will change the oil level and if conducting oil level tests the flywheel needs to be at the same spot. To confirm about the slinger on your engine remove fill plug and slowly rotate engine one revolution watching for oil level changes.:wink2:

LCT recommend to check the oil level when the machine is in the same level surface area and the engine is cold. For the side angle oil dip stick the High oil level is at the top of the dipstick and marked H, this is about level with the top of the engine fill hole threads. Oil will spill a little at this level when dipstick is re-installed. The Low oil level is at the bottom of the dipstick and is marked with an L and there is not usually a convenient reference visible through the fill hole. So the target oil level is between H and L.

If you check the oil level after running the engine for an hour the oil level will rise due to temperature expansion of the oil. Also there will be a drop in oil level from the residual oil left in the engine above the oil sump level. So it is generally advised to routinely keep the oil level check circumstances the same, cold engine and level surface.

A noticeable oil level change after an hour of use would not likely be due to engine burning oil as much as a leak or inconsistent measuring practice.
