Hi, I have a MTD 317E640F000 snow blower and I just replaced the two auger belts. However, when I engage the augers, only one of the two belts has tension, the other is very loose. I have seen some auger pulleys with slots for adjustment, but this one looks like all it has is nuts on either side and both of the pulleys do not appear to be independent. The manual gives the belt P/N of OEM-754-0430 (QTY 2). I would post a picture but do not see attachment for upload here.

they are supposedly sold in pairs so that they are matched. If you have a 5 hp it uses only one of those belts but you have to buy two.

Thanks, tension on the first belt is just fine. I bought two identical belts, not in the same package and not from a box store. Unless the belt is out of spec it should be identical or at least not this far different in size. It is also sitting in the pulley fine. NOt sure what is going on but I'll take another good look.

Same manufacturer for both belts? Belt lengths can change between manufacturers though the belt number is the same.

Yes same manufacturer. I replaced the belts because one of them was loose, but it appears to not be the belts because the new one is loose as well.

did you get this fixed? did you measure both belts? reverse positions? check that one wasn't on pulley due to pulley brake?

I think this is a great suggestion to switch the belts around and see if one is looser then. While the belts are off, measure both belts to see if there is a difference. A 1/4" difference between belts is a big difference.

When belts are supposed to be used together, you ask for a set of matched belts. They are cut from the belt tube next to each other. I used to be able to buy them from the automotive store in town , but they and everyone else that knew something about parts are long out of business. Auto Zone and such have put them all out of business......

I was just reviewing my belts and I found 2 mtd auger belts 754-0430 that were from two different purchases of matched sets, one Oregon and one PIX and they certainly look different. I used one from the most recent matched set on a 5hp needing only one belt and I am wondering if I should pull it back off and keep with it's mate and use the other single instead. Of course I would have done that if I'd realized I had that single in the first place.
