The auger pulley on my blower wobbles horribly and throws belts when I disengage so I ordered the three bearings (one for the auger drive shaft by the pulley and the the two side bearings)

I just pulled the auger assembly out and noticed the shaft from the pulley to the gear box has a little play.

Is this normal or does this mean I have to rebuild the gearbox?

I'd think that if the bearing on the drive shaft at the housing and the two bearings on the impeller ends are good, some minor play here shouldn't affect the auger pulley as I see.

How much play if any should the drive shaft have in the gearbox when not in the housing?

If the pulley bearing was badly warn, and the auger shaft end bearings were badly warn, I would be replacing the bearing/bushings in the gearbox as well. MH

A lot of those Murrays used a 00 or similar grease in the gearbox as well. That does dry up with age so might be a good time to pop it open and regrease it and changed the bushings anyway. I had an Ariens that had some play and I just opened it up and wedged a washer between the case and the bushing to tighten up.
