It depends upon where you live (hint) and the climate, plus the stock conditions at local dealers.

Assuming you're in an area that's warm in spring and the grass is growing fast, I imagine you'd get a better deal on a new but leftover snowblower when dealers are needing floor space for lawnmowers.

That's iffy only because there's such a fine line between stocking a snowblower in spring into summer and the deliveries of lawn care and gardening/farming equipment. You need to catch them with the last of "last year's model" snowblower on the floor as they are unloading the flatbed truck of all the lawnmowers.

IF it was a mild winter (not this year!) and dealers have excess stock left over in the spring, THEN you might find good deals in the Spring..

but for anywhere in the north east and upper mid west, that's not happening this spring.

Generally speaking, if new snowblowers are available, Spring is going to have better prices that Autumn..but it depends on where you live. (hint, again!) ;)

Any opinions on this puppy. what questions should I ask? Do you think parts would be available if needed. Anyone know what year this looks like?

I bought in fall and got a great deal. Usually lawns are nearly done except for the leaves and there is the transition time you may be able to find a dealer willing to deal. Mine had a great advertised price, he had stocked up on some of last years models. When I emailed him asking questions about several brands he sweetened the deal even further! If you are looking at Ariens last fall they offered extended warranties and special financing.

I thought you said would be looking for a new snowblower, and your question about pricing certainly centered around that.

I'm no Toro expert but that looks a lot like my 1978 Ariens as far as bucket style, short chute. fuel tank.
If it runs I would swoop it up in a hot second for $150. The snow cab alone cost more than that.
Where is it? hint

I am looking for a new one. I am obsessed with snowblowers and finding this forum, I feel like a kid in a candy shop. I put up the old toro just to get peoples opinions. You guys are so helpful, I really appreciate it. I could see myself having one new snow blower for the driveway and an old one for the back yard to snow blow paths for the dog. LOL.

I am looking for a new snow blower. Prefer Ariens or Toro. In your opinion what time of year can I find the best prices?
I am in a similar situation. I've been looking for a single stage blower, probably a Honda or Toro. I stopped by a dealer that sells both brands and asked if they were doing any end of season discounting. They said the season doesn't end until April and even then there would only be an additional 5% off, if any blowers were left. It looked like they were already knocking about $50 off a $600 machine. I'm not sure how much of a mark up they have in blowers. I'm thinking that for 5% he can store the blower for me until next fall and I'll make the decision then. Maybe something new will come out.

I have also been considering a used HS621. Anyone know what they are going for in good shape? Not many for sale in the Phila area.

Yes, I probably won't find anything in the northeast this spring. My local Toro Dealer and Ariens dealer take orders for fall in March and April.. I probably will end up ordering one. but watch next year have very little snow and have high inventory and great deals in December/ Jan.

going by the gas thank it looks like a toro 524 with a cab. it is more heavy duty then what you have and you could put a larger motor on it

I'd guess 5/21 from the engine size and tank

After this winter, it seems like a lot of guys want to get a bigger machine out of frustration. Might be a great time to find a used deal.
That's true, though in my case it was a matter of just not getting anything smaller than the 10HP and 10.5HP motors I had which the machines had fallen apart with perfectly good motors. I did just fine though I know my timing sucked and I was at the mercy of a high demand market a month ago.
