Hi all. Been lurking & sponging information but this is my first post.

20 yr old Craftsman 'blower, not sure of model but 10HP, probably built by Murray. I was eating auger belts pretty quick before I noticed that the brake on the auger pulley was only half-there; it had cracked and part of it is gone.

So, the first question is; is this a reasonable conclusion, that the crappy brake is causing the belt stress?

SECOND, I have a replacement brake and set about installing it and hit a snag.

The brake is fixed to the brake arm with a spring pin pushed through a bolt. As far as I can tell, in order to proceed any farther I have to get that spring pin out....and I cannot.

So, are there are best practices for pushing or pulling that pin through the bolt. OR, maybe there's something I'm simply not seeing.
All advice welcome & appreciated.

Brake is No.1
Spring pin is No. 30
Bolt is No. 8

You have to drive that pin out with a solid punch, roughly the same diameter as the pin. Don't go too small, and don't use a pointed punch or the punch might go inside the pin and expand it and crack something.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I got the pin out, but the real challenge is now to get it back together, as it must be assembled in place, i.e. I won't be able to put it together on the workbench and then install the assembled bolt/brake/pin.

I cannot imagine how they got it together in the first place, to be honest.

I'm going to have another go once my hands warm up but, in the meantime, this is how it looks like I'm going to have to approach this.

1. Push bolt through hole in brake arm.
2. Thread nut onto bolt. At least I know these two parts aren't going anywhere.

Now the hard part.
3. Push the spring pin through the hole in the bolt while trying, somehow, to hold the brake pad in place.

To be clear, this all has to happen on the machine.
A puzzle, for sure.

Sounds like you need an extra pair of hands to hold things while you press the pin back in. You might try using a C clamp to press the pin in until it gets through the bold, if you have enough space. Is it possible to clamp the brake pad to something or tie it with some bailing wire to secure it while you fiddle with the pin?

Got 'er. Wasn't easy, had to take the brake arm off, being careful to retain the brake arm spring. I was able to pinch the spring pin just enough for it to get some purchase in the bolt-hole, then it went into the vise and I carefully tapped the pin all the way in.

Bloody tough repair.
