I'm unable to find a local source for a heater box to fit on my Ariens Sno-Thro. It has a 7 HP Tecumseh Snow King engine.

This Sno-Thro is pre-1970 but has been outfitted with a replacement carburetor from a later model Tecumseh Snow King engine. The replacement carb is back-fitted onto the original carb's choke plate which has a side lever instead of the correct top lever.

As a work-around for the missing heater box, I fashioned a carburetor intake tube which will draw warmed air from the top of the muffler and the flywheel fan's warmed air outlet flow. Hopefully, this will prevent icing inside the carburetor. It will not prevent a few snow flakes from being drawn into the carburetor!

To make an intake tube, I started with a figure-S exhaust header which had been removed from a 50cc Derbi Manhattan scooter (the figure-S exhaust header inhibits exhaust flow in order to restrict engine horsepower/top speed). An angle grinder was used to cut out the weld on the 2-piece exhaust header. The header pieces were repositioned to form a figure-U intake tube and welded into position. I removed any debris from inside the intake tube. The mounting flange holes were elongated before fastening the tube to the carburetor with a pair of screws.

I probably would have made my own heater box, like the original, from sheet metal..... that way, all the linkage is protected and warmed as well.
