Just picked up a 22" Craftsman (MTD) (model # 247.889571) - self propel does not work. Removed transmission (part # 918-04296B) and opened it to see the bronze gear worn out, with the bronze shavings in the oil that lubricates the assembly.

Did some research and this seems to be a common problem.

Spoke with the tech at MTD - they do not sell a rebuild kit. E bay has the part - new - for approx $150. Found a used part on line for $35.00 but am skeptical as I don't want to throw good money after bad if the used part fails.

Does anyone have a suggestion on where to get the part at a less expensive price or know where I can get a gear to replace the worn out bronze one. Or any part that will substitute for this poorly engineered assembly.

I just figuring I would spend the $150 and buy the 2 year warranty on the part through ebay.

Thanks!

Ether take a chance on the $35 one or suck it up and buy the one for $150. They are a pretty crappy design. Most likely the machine is only worth $200-$250 at best. So I would go for the $35 one, that's a great price for a used one. I've sold a couple for $80 to $100, used.
