I found a Cub Cadet 1028 on tracks. Guy says its in excellent condition. From the pictures, it doesn't look bad. It has a blue Tecumseh engine, and electric start. It has manual chute rotation, but the deflector on the top can be adjusted from the control panel. He is asking $650. Are these decent machines? Do they have known issues? Are there parts still available? Thanks. John.

I don't see anything wrong with it for the money. If it fits your needs, and you maintain it well, it will last years. Keep in mind, every recommendation here is buy Ariens or Honda, there's tons of CCs out there, they work.

My last machine was the TroyBilt Stormtracker 9528. So the 10 hp 28” Cub cadet is probably very similar. They were made by MTD. The Tecumseh Snow King motors are good when maintained right. Some parts like replacement tracks may be getting harder to find. If it’s local go check it out see if everything runs and works right before you make an offer.

I went and looked at the snowblower today. It turns out that it’s a 1997 928STE. that’s not the end of the world though. I went over the snowblower thoroughly, and found the following. The bucket and frame have been repainted. But It doesn’t look like there was a lot of rust before the paint job. The augers have a little slop in them, where they enter the bearings the are bolted to the bucket. The blower turns left on a dime, but turns right a little wider. Maybe this is just a cable adjustment. The carburetor leaks around the float bowl, but this doesn’t affect starting or running. Everything works, including the light. The engine starts on the second pull, and idles and runs smoothly. The muffler is intact, it seems loud. The oil was up to the full line on the dipstick. It wasn’t dirty, but wasn’t new. The tracks were replaced two years ago, and there is no tread wear on them. They do however have small dry rot cracks from sitting. I held the machine back in all 6 gears, and the tracks dug into the ground and brought the front end up. The engine is the Tecumseh HMSK90. I’ve heard these engines are not well liked because of the two shafts that are used for the pulleys. He wanted $650, but we settled on $550 after I pointed out what I found.

I have a similar vintage MTD (non-tracked) machine and generally speaking, they are fairly well built. They are not an Ariens, Toro or Simplicity, but you also didn't pay that much for it, relatively speaking. In my experience, if you take your time with it and don't push the machine too hard, it will do the job just fine.

I don't know about the tracks, but parts for the rest of the machine itself should be readily available. As for the engine, mine has an HMSK80 and I believe all of those HMSK 80,90, and 100 engines of that vintage are dual shaft. I've been thinking about what to do when/if mine grenades, and it seems to me that there are four choices:

1. Rebuild it if possible and you have the know-how.
2. Sell it for next to nothing.
3. Get a used engine (I found more out there than I expected).
4. Repower.

Regarding item 4, I have found a number of threads on this forum dealing with how to repower a machine that was originally designed for one of these engines with a single shaft powerplant. It looks pretty straightforward and I may attempt it myself when the time comes. I have been impressed with members willingness to share images and how-to advice. HTH.
