Tractor is a 910002.

Two questions that don't appear to be addressed in the owners manual. First, have you ever seen these couplers worn to the point that they interlock and won't disengage when you turn the lever? Second, shouldn't the belt engagement lever lock into the hook on the blower engagement lever as an interlock?

Holy smokes, that's quite the couple you have there. I have seen my fair share of worn snowblower parts, but that one takes the cake. I assume you have to turn the engine off before having to stick your hands in there to manually disengage??? If that's the case then 1. Please be careful; and 2. Swap those couplers out for a newer set.

As for the interlock, I want to say yes but it's been quite some time since I've looked at one of those that hasn't been tinkered with as to not have that safety removed.

Yes, I have to turn the blower off and back the blower shaft off to get them separated. The other side of the coupler is worn in the exact same pattern and will fit just as snugly if I rotate the fan shaft 180º so I'm thinking that they must have been disengaged often enough to allow wear in the same pattern on both sides of the coupler. Must have some real long hours on it to get to that point.

In looking at the parts books, I see the parts are still available new but too expensive [$115 each half] to invest in for this machine. These old Ariens machines without the safety features are a bit of a risk to run anyway and I don't suppose it's much worse the way it is. I am considering separating the machine and scribing a line across the centerline and grinding or cutting away the damaged faces. Could work. Should work.

I don't see why grinding wouldn't work. But instead of buying new parts, see if there's a non-working blower from craiglist that you can get the parts from, or just swap motors? Swapping motors is easier than having to take apart the whole machine for the coupler

So to answer the riddle as to whether or not the couplers can be ground flat, yes they can.

It would have been better to remove them and set them up in a milling machine but it can be done freehand. 4 1/2" angle grinder with a thin cut off disc was used. Took longer to clean up the dust and grease afterward than it did for the repair.

To answer my second question, the auger engagement handle does interlock with the belt engagement lever when the shaft handle is not bent. It just was not obvious until I separated the bucket from the tractor. Couple of pulls with a pipe wrench and a sharp rap with a 4lb hammer got it back where it belonged. This machine must have encountered some serious abuse at some time in it's past as I found 2 of the impeller blades were seriously bent. Those needed a few minutes with the porta-power to straighten out.
