Cub Cadet 528 SWE was using the blower today and it stopped throwing snow. On loser inspection, the friction wheel is turning but none of the augers are. All of the shear pins are in place properly. Please help, have 2' of snow to clean and no stores open.

The friction wheel drives the ground wheels to make the machine go forward and backward. The friction drive is driven by the rear belt on the engine (the one closest to the motor block.

The auger is driven by the front belt on the engine. Check that belt to see if its damaged or off completely. Keep your fingers out of the area, remove the belt cover, start the blower and watch the action on the front belt when you engage the auger clutch. If that belt is spinning and in good shape, then you might have a gear box problem. You said the shear pins are good? With the engine off and the spark plug wire removed, did you try rotating the augers to see if they move by hand. They should not. If they do, see if the impeller also turns. If not, problem is in the gear box.

The augers turn by hand. I took the cover off and the is lots of dust from the belt close to the front but when I turned it off with the belt cover off the belt appeared to still work. How do I tell for sure if it's the gear box. I sucked up a wicker snowman that was under the snow, I thought I caught it quick and the shear pins are all fine.

If you can turn the augers by hand, either the shear pins are broken, or the gear box is stripped or if there is a woodruff key or roll pin in it, that may be broken. If the gear box was good, you would not be able to turn the auger rakes with good shear pins in place.

There is a big brass gear that runs the auger drive shafts and it meshes with a worm gear inside the gearbox. The worm gear is driven by the auger shaft, which is driven from the engine pulley. The worm gear moves the big brass/bronze gear inside the gearbox to rotate the auger drive shafts and spin the augers. Some of the brass gears are locked onto the shaft by a woodruff key, others with a roll pin. If you have a parts listing for your machine, you can find out which, but I would guess the brass gear is either stripped (teeth worn off) or possibly broke when you hit the snowman thing and will have a big split from the center to the outside edge.

Did you remove the shear pins completely? If they are installed and not broken, you will have to get into the gearbox im afraid.

Thats not always true..
I know with 1970's Ariens, you can spin the augers by hand, with the engine off, shear pins intact, and gear box intact.
they dont spin easily, but you can move them..

Hmm does that apply to Cub Cadet units as well?

dont know..
there have been different gearbox designs over the years, some will spin, with effort, even when everything is normal,
others wont spin at all if everything is normal.

I dont know where modern Cubs fall on the spectrum.

If they spin *easy*, when shear bolts are intact, then that's bad..
but if you can move them with some effort, gearbox could still be fine.

I think, that being MTD, they fall under the "it should not turn" category. After a quick look at a parts list, they don't show the internals of the gearbox as being available separately.

Found the part, it uses a woodruff key.
