I did a test and found my local Mobil station only had 3.9 percent ethanol in its fuel compared to 8-10 percent for the other guys(I did the water method in a graduated cylinder). Anyway, I poured a quart of fuel into a Chinese food container, mixed in some water, and after it separated, punched a hole about a quarter inch above the ethanol/water mixture and drained out the "just gas" into another container. Boy did that make a difference in the old Ariens! Also did that to mix up some 2-stroke fuel and the results were great. It takes a little time but I think it's worth it.

Should have looked here first. I saw an article in Popular Mechanics back from the 80's about the Kent-Moore alcohol detection Kit #J34353 while doing a search.
