Both Honda and Toyota had problems with their respective vehicles, the Crosstour and the Venza. They were neat looking, that's for sure.. I believe Honda got most of their bugs worked out in the last 2 years they were produced, same with Toyota, so I'd get the last model year that you can, 2015 I believe. Both Toyota and Honda didn't sell enough of em to warrant continual production of them and Honda decided to bank on the HR-V instead. Which is not selling as well as they would like, but what do you expect in a heavily flooded manufacturers market.
I believe the earlier J series engines with the VCM were known to be somewhat problematic.
I spend some times on a motor oil forum (I know, sounds weird, but we're both on a snow blower forum...) and it's a common recommendation to use a full synthetic oil that could help prevent future oil consumption.
I think that many of he newer models with VCM seem to have many of their bugs worked out. Which year that is, I don't know, might need to spend some time on the Crosstour forum for that. I think there are also aftermarket mods that will disable the VCM.
Other than that, I'm sure the Crosstour is a fine vehicle, sharing many parts with other Hondas of that time frame. I like Hondas, but the Crosstour was never my style. Plus I like cars with out timing belt replacement requirements (I have no idea if other vehicles in this sector are chain or belt, just that my Honda Element has a timing chain with no replacement interval).
After many many vehicles of every brand over 50 years driving in the worst salt and snow conditions found anywhere I now only buy Toyotas. If I needed an AWD I'd get a Subaru, probably a manual shift Forester.
I have owned Hondas pretty much all my life, so I can speak from experience. The wife has an Acura RL with winter tires, its awd (Honda's SH-AWD), its might as well be a tank with this set up i.e. awd and snow tires, very sure footed, for the price you cant find a better deal as the car has all the amenities that you'd want and then some.
We also have an 07 Honda odyssey, this one is the one with the early iteration of the Honda VCM. I was a bit worried with the aforementioned issues as well pertaining to the VCM but we have had the Odyssey for 6 years now and it currently has 274k miles on the odometer. I did install the "VCM Muzzler" which basically shuts the VCM system off, a $50ish investment that was well worth it. The odyssey does burn a bit of oil, may be half a quart between 3k interval oil changes which isnt too bad, plugs were changed at 200k and the old ones were pretty healthy.
My main reason for installing the muzzler was to get rid of the engine vibration when the VCM would kick on and off, almost use to feel as if one of the engine mount was broken. The cherry on the top was the fact that the VCM didnt really seem to help with fuel milage, at least not as advertised. The van still did pretty much the same average as it use to in the past with the VCM.
I would think an An Acura RL AWD might be close to 40k in Canada. Honda, Acura and Toyota probably have the best reliability. A Subaru CrossTrek I think is around 25k and can be had in a manual shift. Just can't stomach cvt.
Yeah, if I'm looking for excitement I'll join a skydiving club. For cars, I want something that's not constantly going back to the dealer for repairs. My last Camry = 230,000 kms, ..I replaced one .98cent light bulb. That was the sum total of non regular maintenance upkeep in the 13 years I had it. It still had the original battery in it when I sold it.
