Honda Dealer Donated This HS50 Snowblower For Our Next Give Away ! WILL IT RUN???

1023 Views 22 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  orangputeh
The other day one of our local Honda dealers came to visit my shop and talk Honda snowblowers.
He and his head mechanic are also members of my Honda group and they help members with questions. His name is Dan and he runs a Honda and rental shop in Tahoe City California. They also work on boats which makes sense since they are right on Beautiful Lake Tahoe.

Well, anyways, He donated this old 44 year old Honda HS50 snowblower which I hope I can get running and driving to give away to someone in our community. Dan ( in picture ) also gave me some spare parts as you can see . ( picture used with permission )

It has been sitting idle for years at Dan's showroom parked next to a NEW Honda HSS1332 to show customers the difference from the first generation Honda 2 stage from around 1979 to the present day 2023 Honda's.

It's very very clean, nearly showroom looking condition. It will be a challenge getting it running and driving again after sitting for many many years. I may use this thread to show the process to go thru from start to finish.

Hope you enjoy.

First thing to do is CHECK OIL> no oil in crankcase so added synthetic 5W-30

. Then removed plug and put some oil in and pulled starter rope to work piston up and down and coat cylinder walls and rings. Like I said this HS50 has been sitting for years.

Then checked spark. I usually use an inline spark tester so I dont have to remove plug. But in this case I wanted to clean the plug. Laid it on metal , with key on , and pulled starter cord. Nice bright spark.

Key does not work. Tumblers are jammed up so sprayed graphite in there. In meantime disconnected the ground wire for switch. To stop engine you can close choke or touch ground wire to metal. ( 2nd pic )

3rd pic is the 50 all cleaned up. Looks almost showroom condition.

stay tuned . I know most of you snowblower maniacs know all this stuff. This thread is for new people who may have a no start problem and want to get a Honda running and driving. But I enjoy this stuff so maybe you all will too.

Got it running. Video on my FB group. However gas leak under control panel. Real PITA removing panel.
Had to remove gas tank and recoil to get to mounting bolts.

Not sure if lines are bad . They look pretty good for 44 years or defective shut off valve.

Think Honda learned from this as they moved control panel to top of handlebars with the 55 and beyond.

I really like the embossed Honda lettering on the bucket of those older machines. It showed a pride in workmanship that I wish was still around.

Replaced the fuel lines. One was cracked at valve so pretty sure that was the culprit for leak.
After reinstalling the control panel and fuel tank will check for leaks.

Then onto the drive system that is locked up. If the gearbox or sub tranny is bad I will be SOL on this restore with this chassis. Parts are NLA for the trannies. But no time wasted because the engine is squared away.

Replaced fuel lines.
This pic shows machine up on nose with belly plate removed.
the black friction disk is locked up so you can not shift.
A little penetrating oil and time unlocked it.
Then cleaned up all the oil and applied a very light coat of grease on splined shaft that the disk travels on.
Made some other minor adjustments and greases some other service points.

Started engine...no leaks ...surprise surprise surprise ( in Gomer voice )
Tested drive and it works smoothly in all 4 gear gears.

Next will be general service. Will check back if finding anymore problems.
This machine is 44 years old and seems like it has very little use. This may be a concern for gaskets and seals.

no leaks but being proactive as this machine shows very little use
in 44 years.

Almost done with service.
Now have to decide if I am going to do the giveaway now or wait for a better time like late fall/early winter.
The problem I have is storage space.

Maybe now. probably won't see much interest as season is pretty much over.
The more interest the better. Sometimes people will see these giveaways online and then donate their blower
for a future giveaway.

I hope the machine goes to a deserving individual, who will take care of it.
It would be a shame to see one in such wonderful original condition be stored outside exposed to the elements and die an early death from lack of maintenance and abuse.

Thought i was done with service. Machine works GREAT! Starts first pull and drives like a dream.
I replaced fuel lines but shut off valve is leaking.
Will have to take it apart and see if bad O ring or sumting.

this part is NLA from Honda.

My HS-55 K2 was leaking at either the fuel line connection or internally in the fuel shut off as well. I was lucky to be able to buy 3 parts new from local Honda parts place for $12. Is it at all possible for you to use an HS-55 or 80 fuel shut off valve? Or was this problem resolved already?

My blower has been parked since nice weather began, in March for Calgary, so I've been distracted with my car forum to get that beast ready for summer.

Show room blower. It's a sin to use. It should be in a museum!

Ha, That;s what i was thinking. This 50 deserves to be in the Smithsonian Museum. Hope it goes to the right person. I resolved the gas leak by using a shut off valve from one of my parts 50's. It is specific to the 50.

Thanks. Would love to see pics of your machines.
