Every once in a while someone gets banned. So I read the rules, again, a sticky post under the forum House Rules and Helpful Hints.

You can read it, summarizing, no political, religious, porn posting, or cursing. Be nice, don't bash anyone, if you have a problem with someone first deal with it through private messaging. And No Brand bashing. Oh well! One point mentioned I'm not quite clear on, no solicitations. I like knowing when someone has something for sale or needs something. Maybe they mean outside of the For Sale forum?

I've been on several forums over the years and this forum is the only one with a really unusual friendly atmosphere like we all know each other and are friends. I don't travel but if I did I would want to PM some on here just to meet them for an hour, say Hello, shake their hand, and see their machines, shop, tools, yard, operation.

Thank You.

Of all the discussion sites i belong to this one is the friendliest. one is my former workplace site which is really nasty at times. social media is full of hateful miserable people.

two other sites that are very friendly is Nextdoor.com It's like a neighborhood facebook type site. you have to use your real name and you get to know and deal with your neighbors. another friendly site if you own a subaru and work on your own vehicles is USMB. Ultimate Subaru Message Board. really good group of people.

come to think of it. any specialized site that i have visited like electricians, welders , and diy sites are fairly civil.

on Snow Blower Forum there is only one member that I know of that likes to attack people and I put him on ignore.

i'm on a Goldwing forum and a few years ago I found out that another forum member was planning a trip to the U.P. then comming down through lower Michigan heading to ohio. I got ahold of them rode 40 miles to meet them treated them to lunch, rode to the MI / OH boarder with them (to keep them out of the worst of the construction ) before returning home. I also met up with one of our forum members in SE ohio on my way home from hazard, Ky a few years ago. we had a nice visit and I got treated to a great lunch. if I get to Gettysburg this year micah / joe want to meet up, i'm all for it and todd would be really disappointed if I were near him and didn't check in

The Moderators do their best to only censor in our opinion what really needs censoring and only boot someone if they're just impossible to reason with.
In most cases a member will get a number of warnings unless they really get combative or aggressive and it's pretty clear they're asking for it.
We want it to be friendly and helpful. We understand a little brand love and a little brand bashing but as long as it's respectful to the other member(s), life is good.

The big thing is if you're talking to another member in the same manner as you would if you were face to face, you're likely ok. It's the people who hide behind a keyboard and spew hostility and negativity that no one really wants on their forum.

And it's not just the moderators. If you see something on the forum that you think isn't appropriate, please flag it for one of us to look at.

We are lucky

We are lucky to have a site like this where people are friendly and respect each other. Not only that, folks are very helpful towards rookie fix-it people like myself and this has helped tremendously. It is rare to find a welcoming place where people have such a positive attitude and go out of their way to help each other out. The world can learn a lot from SBF!

I moderate a couple other places, specialty car sites. Very supportive group for the most part. But... and there always is one... there seem to be some folks who just can't let others have a good time. We have a points system similar to what your driver's license probably has. Different flavors of infraction garner you a related points penalty. Some offenses have points that never expire, while most will disappear after a suitable no-more-offenses period. You might get an instant time-out or vacation for certain offenses, and there are a very few that merit an instant and non-appealable ban. Post porn, threaten a member or mod, something like that.

In most places, being a moderator is a relatively thankless job. I appreciate the tone and tempo of the group here. Seems many are old farts who have the time and willingness to share their experiences and knowledge with others with the same interests.

My general guidance for folks in forums like this is to speak/type/post as if your mother was reading everything you share. Think "golden rule" and you'll be golden for the most part.

Thanks to mods and members for keeping this place a pleasant and informative forum for us.

What does being banned mean? I see a member post although it says "banned" under his name.
You are seeing posts they made before they were banned.
After they are banned they can no longer post, but their older posts remain, (the ones that werent deleted) and then the word "banned" appears with their name.

Do we ever get an explanation of why a certain user was banned? I was going through some of my posts to find a particular reply from a specific user, and I came across several banned folks.

I'm sure the reasons were valid and I've definitely seen some folks post the same info over and over and over that I could definitely do without, but it does make me wonder.

I would list the names I'm curious about if a moderator would be willing to disclose the reason(s) behind the ban.

Does the forum get an explanation, no. It's usually something that's initiated by a member complaint or flagged post. In most cases I will send the complainant a PM on what I did or didn't do and why. We Moderators do have a staff area where we talk over problems to get a consensus on what to do. So action is usually discussed before being carried out unless someone is blatantly violating the rules, profanity, attacking someone, ... In a case like that a moderator is likely to just step in and stop the problem immediately.
That area can only be accessed by Moderators and above.

If you click on someone's screen name you can then click on "Find more posts by ( )". If you look at their last post or the last couple posts you should see something they've done or a direction they're headed that's contrary to the type of decorum we try to maintain. If you see their last or last few comments were deleted than they went off the deep end and their views or opinions were beyond what a moderator considered to be appropriate. Some people take a warning or criticism better than others.

I'm constantly worried about being banned. My wife says I have a strange sense of humor. Don't know why she puts up with me for over 35 years.

I asked her about it and she said I make her laugh.
