Is my shaft too short? Tecumseh 10hp

Is there any shims or something to position the drive pully to the engine shaft? I see that the 10hp has a shaft that is about 1,5cm shorter than the 8hp. And i cannot find any retaining bolt for the pully on the exploded view either.

Are you sure you are measuring it correctly. It sounds like you are replacing an 8 HP with a 10 HP engine, did you check the engine mounting pattern? I would think the larger engine would have a larger block and to keep the drive pulley in the same relationship to it's driven pulley you need to measure from the front engine mount to the end of the shaft on both engines to find it's position. Or use a straight edge from the bottom (driven) pulley.

L heads 8 and 10 are the same
# 16 holds sheave in place no shims

HM80 and Hm100 are the same engines, only with different bore. The 8hp has 3.06 bore and the 10hp has 3.19 (from what I can read)

Hopefully I’ll get my tractor home over the weekend, so I can pull the belt cover and see if the shorter shaft will match. I see the sheave bolts are in the center of the sheave, so I guess the length of the shaft probably don’t matter.

I'm guessing someone cut the shaft, or it was custom made that way
Regardless as long as the set screw still hits the shaft I'd think it's going to work fine. If not, drill for a new set screw, preferably over the key.

2.75 inches is all you get on the 8 and 10 flatties
the sheave is 2.5 inches long
dont fix what isnt broke

And as best I can tell, the top picture is the 10HP he's looking to use and it measures roughly 2 1/4".

Unless I misread his post.

He was concerned it wouldn't work with the sheave.

Are you asking because you plan on installing the 10hp engine with the short shaft on your Ariens someday?

If so, you'll be ok, because the Ariens pulley gets installed very close to the sump cover on the 924 series, like this:

Here's where I think your setscrew will end up even with that short shaft engine:

That’s correct. Looks stock, with a threaded bolt hole in the shaft. I’ll just have to check my machine if it fits.

Great, thanks! Thats what I‘m hoping for!

Michael Scott just walked in “That’s what she said!”

I believe post #2 fit that category before it got edited.

So it seems my old dawg also has a short shaft… The shaft stop about 7mm inside the belt drive. And the drive bolts sit about 4cm from the engine, so I guess my short shaft will be suficcient.

At least, my wife does not complain about how long I’ll blow…

I’ll see to it once I start pulling apart.
