I have a John Deere 185 with a snow blower on it. When I toggle the switch to turn it on, the motor dies. I've disconnected the drive belt to the blower (it's all free) and still have the same problem. I suspect a grounding or bad connection issue. Any ideas?

I would guess you are on the right track with suspecting a bad ground or connection, possible even a faulty switch?

How embarrassing! Found my problem. I had put a block of cement on the back of the tractor behind the seat to give it more traction (already have 4 weights). This caused the seat to move up, and of course opening up the safety switch that's under the seat. Luckily I didn't get as far as taking the tractor to John Deere. All's well that ends well.

How did you figure that out? That's not something I would have even been close to thinking about checking.
