I'm working on a John Deere 2 stage snowblower for a co-worker. It has a 7HP Tecumseh motor and 24" auger. I believe it is around a 2005 -2007 model year. My problem is the gear box. He had some dog cable wrap up in the auger. I replaced the shear pins and added 80W oil to the auger gear box because it was low. The next day I noticed the gear box had a slow oil leak. On further inspection I noticed the cable must have damaged the washer closest to the gear box. The washer was bent/warped. That must have caused the seal to be damaged slightly. I know how to fix this (the right way) but my co-worker doesn't want me to expend that much time on the machine. He's already dumped a bit of $ into it for other parts. If I remove remaining the oil from the gear box could I replace it with 00 grease (hoping the grease would not leak)? This would save the time (labor) and expense of pulling the gearbox to replace the seal.
