Hello everyone! I will start by saying I am new here and completely stumped lol. I have looked everywhere and have not come up with a solution so i hope you guys can help me out.

I have a snowblower I am repairing for a friend and I cannot get it to fire up. The first time I tried to fire it up it backfired, so I adjusted the valves, checked that the key wasn't sheared and cleaned the flywheel of rust. It seems to me that it has way to much compression when pulling over so I checked and it has 140psi after three pulls. So i thought it must be the compression release has failed. I took it the cover off and inspected the cam and the compression release is intact but looks slightly wore, not enough that i would be concerned but correct me if I am wrong. I am unable to compare the height of the compression relief tab to know. push rods are good as well and it seems to move the valve properly when i turn it over. Could it be excess carbon buildup? I haven't had the head off yet but i am leaning that way.

Any help would be appreciated!

I'm no expert, but what about fuel, spark and carb? Are all of those ok? Did you check the carb to see it's condition and if it needed a cleaning? How old is the motor?
As above, check for spark, then spray starting fluid in the carb, make sure it goes in the throat not somewhere inside a plastic housing.
Has lots of spark and it would get fuel but it blows back out of the carb instead of sucking it in. Not sure on age. It's a model 20M314.

If the air is being pumped the wrong way, I would strongly suspect a valve issue on the intake side...

Well I got it going and I am slightly ashamed. Valves were moving fine. Timing was perfect. Had fuel and spark. Still not sure why the motor wasn't getting gas in the cylinder. I took out the spark plug and dropped it, so I re gapped it and checked spark with it out. Seemed to spark good. But since I dropped it I replaced it with a new one. Sprayed brake clean in the intake and it fired right up! I let it run for a bit and seems fine now. Strange that even though the other plug wasn't firing properly before it was also dry. Thanks for your input everyone!
I had an engine like that, fixed everything and it would not start, lots of spark and just popped and backfired a lot. I replaced the spark plug and it fired right up. Just had another machine that would not rpm off idle and replaced the plug and fixed it. $3 for me s worth a try.

Very strange. The funny thing is this is the second motor I have repaired for this guy that had a spark issue. The first was an old Honda GC with points ignition. plug had no spark, put my inline spark tester in and it would light up like Christmas. tried a new plug and same thing. Ended up replacing the points and condenser. then I had spark on the plug. So I bought a spark tester that you can actually set the gap on. it produced enough volt to light the bulb but not jump the gap. Another lesson learned.
