Picked this Old Ariens up yesterday. Freebie. Not planning on reviving it. Should be able to salvage some hardware from it. But I may still try to see if I can start it.Any idea when it was sold as new?

Definitely a 1973, model # 910021 was 73 only according to the Ariens literature.

IMHO it's a 1973. 910021 serial 001559 with Sno Thro 910995 serial 085151. The adjustment link for the friction wheel is different than the one on the 1974. Note: I have both: a 1973 and a 1974. I have compared. :)
Interesting....what other little changes do you observe between 73 and 74?

I did not realize there were 6 different 8hp 910000 models between 73 and 74

009
010
016
018
020
021

It would be valuable to document all the subtle changes

I don't have time right now but will definitely get back to you later with my observations.

I believe this chart has an error in that the 910006 is a 6hp model not 8hp.
(Makes me wonder if there are other errors? Like a very late production 73 date code being classified as a 73 model, when we know this usually didn't usually apply to earlier models, as per Scot's site)

1973 vs 1974

I believe that one of the clues lies within the friction wheel adjustment procedure.

The items on the 1973 differ from the ones on the 1974.

The adjustment steps are also different.

IMHO these items clearly indicate whether you are looking at a 1973 or a 1974.

IHTH

OK, I totally agree now that the clutch is the way to differentiate between 73 and 74 models.....the 006 model is definitely a 6hp, as is the 019 model.... only difference is the 019 has a 74' yoke clutch & differential, and the 006 has the (1973 only) 466 clutch lever. The frame assembly is the same for both, (1 bracket 458 frame). There is only two frames for all 73 and 74 models...the 458 frame and the 459 frame....458 for 6 and 7hp, & 459 two bracket frame for 8hp models.
I think there is another error in the part sheet as my 73 7hp engine numbers don't match the stated Tec model on the parts manual.....I'm about 90% sure it's the original engine except it's an original 12v start engine. The tractor still has the original Carlisle 2 ply Indian heads, and original air cleaner, as well as the E start provisions. It came with a 910 series 26 mower, no snow thro. The model numbers and serial stampings are unreadable, but I'm pretty sure it's an 008 model
