I had just replaced the Engine on my old MTD with a used 7hp Tecumseh.. it had been sitting for some time.

the engine starts up just fine although will not run good at level ground.

if you push the handle down (lift the front off ground) about 20 degrees it runs really good.

I don't know much about carbs, but would could be causing this? float adjustment?

I have included a picture.

i found the problem, the choke lever was going past its stop and choking the engine, when tilted back it would return to the open position and the engine ran good!

Thanks, glad I came across this site while trying to sove my problem!

I was surprised it started as easily as it did, it had deffinatly been sitting for a long time with no plug in it, lots of dust inside and out, blew it out with the compressor, installed a plug and fuel tank and it started in a couple pulls.
