I'm a recent, new owner of the Ariens Compact 24, Model 920021. The auger spins freely while the impeller only spins when engaged. Is that the way it works, or is the auger supposed to power spin also. Very difficult to tell from the manual.
Thank you....

welcome to the forum meld !

not sure i understand your query, but are you saying you can spin the augers freely ? are the sheer pins installed and intact ? is this a new machine or a new to you machine ? hopefully the auger gearbox is ok.

Typically when the auger clutch is engaged the engine drives a belt to drive the impeller shaft (where the impeller is mounted) and the shaft extends to the gear box between the auger halves and drives both (augers) at the same time. If a shear bolt fails then only half the auger turns, the one with the good shear bolt. If neither auger halves turn (and the shear bolts are good) then the gear box has failed and needs repair.

So check the auger shafts near the gear box for through bolts. If the bolts appear good and you turn one half of the auger and the other half also turns (and the impeller does not turn) then your gearbox has failed and needs to be repaired. If turning one half of the auger just turns that one then likely the shear bolt has broken.
