Recommendations: getting fed up with this mower project!

Grabbed this last year. Very good condition, searching governor, assumed carb, shelved it for the winter. Dragged it out this spring, same issue. Already bought a missing throttle assembly last year.

cleaned carb, no better. Bought new Honda carb and some gaskets. New discovery, can’t get the main bolts to thread deep enough to hold tight. It’s like the outer section of the holes have thread issues. If I remove the carb, I can tighten bolts alone, but not with whole assembly. Did notice dome silver metal filings in the holes. I got believe I ever ivertightened.

anyway, starting engine shakes assembly off. Bad. Lock tite, longer shoulder bolts available, walk away? If it wasn’t a Honda engine, I would strip it and dump it.

I don't even bother with mowers, totally not worth the effort. Most people just buy a new one, cheap enough.

In for a penny, in for a pound! I’ve actually sold more mowers than blowers, and more $ total, and they take up less room. More people need mowers than blowers. That said, mowers go for 150-200 vs 400-600 new. I can’t put much time or $ into them. This particular mower with the Honda engine would have already sold if it didn’t have this issue. Looking for an effective solution. It’s like the outer section of the bolt hole rounded out. Need a longer bolt.
if the hole is stripped you likely need to do something like a heli coil. you could try to find a longer bolt but i think that would be pretty tough.

i think i have made more money off selling lawn mowers than i have selling snowblowers. if you get the right machines they are easy $150-200 which is still a pretty good deal since i see people offering lawn mower maintenance for $60+ parts. most lawn mowers need almost nothing other than basic maintenance. carb cleaning, blade sharpening and oil change and you have likely just made $100-$180 for the hour you likely spent on it.

Don’t tell him that, he’ll be sucking up every decent mower with 100 miles (like he does with blowers)!!
Can you switch to studs instead of bolts? Seat the studs with a thread locker or epoxy.
I went to my local Ace hardware and bought two pieces of metric all thread (threaded rod) that is 6mm x 1.mm x 100mm. I cut slots on one end for a screwdriver blade and use them as alignment rods to hold the gaskets, spacer, carb and air filter box together when re-installing after cleaning. I then un-screw one stud while pushing on the carb and install the factory bolt and tighten, then remove the other and tighten the factory bolt. This keeps the gaskets from slipping out of position. There is enough (1/2") of the studs sticking out to install nuts on.

Did go to Ace, spent a while there. I could use spacers in the two air housing holes to replace the bolt shoulders, but could not find any metric bolts longer than the originals. Also, the originals have a slight taper at the ends, which the hardware store bolts don’t have. Mine are M6 with 1.00 thread pitch and about 3” shank.

They don't have longer bolts, but they do have the threaded rod which measures 4" (100mm) long.

that's an idea, if they have them in metric. hate to give up on this mower, but i am spending a lot of time on it with diminishing resale possibility.
just called ace, no metric threaded rod.

In the hardware section of the store where all the specialty items are in compartmented plastic boxes, the box marked metric threaded rod? 6mm x 1.mm x 100mm.

i called it in, did not stop in. spoke to hardware person, said they didnt have it. maybe they do.
thx for the effort. was hoping to grab it local rather than mail order.
You're in MA, not sure where. BelMetric.com - Metric Fasteners & Hardware is located in Tyngsborough (right off Rt 3); they have more metric hardware than you thought existed. I've worked with them for over 30 years. Tell them you know me.
They have M6 x 1 bolts in various grades up to 145 mm (depends on full or partial thread).

Last mower I bought for $10. Washed it off, cleaned air filter and sold it for 100. Checked over before letting it go. All good. Even the oil was like new. Not bad for 40 minutes work.

I would go to the store. I have not found the employees to be very useful/helpful.

You could also try Lowe's and HD. If I can't find it at Ace, usually one of them will have it.
