Ok so I have a 10hp tecumseh that runs like crap. Sometimes it runs good other times it surges and runs like crap. Engine rebuilt last year new carb on it.

I'm think the throttle linkage might be gummed up. Making it hard for the governor to work properly.

What do you all think.

does the carb have the fixed nut on the bottom of the bowl or the adjustable jet?

New carb? Means nothing, get an adjustable carb #632334

Probably bad gas. Drain the system and start again with fresh fuel. Preferably zero alcohol.

Yea, I agree with Dannoman, I jumped too fast. I always look at the gas first. Drain the carb and tank separately into 2 clear soda bottles, water will sink to the bottom, check for clarity and color.

carb needs adjustment or intake leaks.
adjust low and high mixture screws, this is the most common fix.
use brake cleaner around intake pipe connections to find intake leaks

So I was looking at it yesterday and think that there is a hole different problem. I started it up and let it run for about 1/2 and well I went took the throttle and put to idle and the to fast idle it. When I did this blue smoke started coming out of exhaust.

Now when I did the engine last year the head gasket wasn't in the kit. I know also it could be the rings on piston. This is a 25 year old machine. That came from a farm and hadn't ran for about 5 to 10 years. Not sure how hard it is to replace rings. I know head gasket is simple but rings not sure.

Based on the history it could be any number of things, internal and external.

I'd start with a compression and leak-down test.

Rebuilt... can you elaborate. Did you do it yourself?

Cold and hot compression numbers will be helpful.

I'm sorry what I should have said was I replaced all the gaskets because severe oil was leaking from everywhere on it. I know it still leaks from somewhere on it. Around the air cleaner. I have to wait for a bit to do compression test on it because it is been very cold out side lately. 5 days ago it was like -52*c here. Had it going 2 days ago blowing about 10cm of snow. Still works good just blowing blue smoke.

Anyways I will get the compression test done soon and report back. I did adjust the valves last year also.

Ok well I still need cold but hot is 58 for compression. I will get cold tomorrow

Where is the oil leaking from? If your crankcase breather valve is not working properly, that can cause oil weeping from various places while running.

I've never checked mine hot. But cold, I've gotten 45-50, on engines that ran fine, with good valve clearances, etc. That's with the pull starter; electric numbers were higher.

The breather is leaking. The one that opens up to adjust the valves. Sparkplug after about 10 minutes of running is wet. It is a flathead. Snow blower is a 1987 Noma.

Ok think I figured out why it was running like crap. 1 I am a idiot. 2 Make sure machine is on level ground before checking the oil.

Anyways my snowblower had to much oil in it and it was blowing it out the breather tube. Making a mess everywhere. The compression is 65 by the way when cold

A faulty gas cap can have the machine run like crap. If you unscrew the cap so it's on but not tight and the machine runs good, the cap is your problem. It means it isn't venting properly. It happened to me last year.
