I have a 28" mtd snowblower, and it seems to be working fine, but outside of the machine while snowblowing I notice random sparks in the area above the air filter - what is causing this, and how do i fix it?

First what year and model number and type of engine and if you have some pictures that would help.
But it sounds like something is rubbing on the flywheel.

It might also be an overly rich mixture causing fuel that is not completely burned to be blown out through the muffler.

That same overly rich mixture might be contributing to carbon build up in the head and the "sparks" might be chunks of carbon being blown out through the muffler.

It will be difficult to get a picture of the sparks, as they are small, and occur in a 6" area in various locations directly around the air filter.

welp, i agree with charles, carbon chunking, possibly somethin rubbing on the flywheel too.....
dont believe any wiring would, if a wire was bare it'd ground out&not let engine run.
at least that's been my experiences.....
if this thing has elect.start or headlight maybe a wire is rubbing via vibration
