Has anyone thought of changing to larger sprockets and maybe chain size? I have 60 yrs of motorcycling behind me and such changes are normal. I realize it might entail eliminating the guard(or making new one) but as the original is a weak link on the machine this would seem logical.:question:

Are you having trouble with any of them? How old is the machine and what kind of use has it had?

Are you talking about changing sprocket diameters or just a beefier sprocket of the same size and tooth count along with a heavier duty chain? Changing diameter would change the ground speed of your machine, which might be a problem. My current machine is 9 years old, and I just had it apart for post winter maintenance, and all 4 sprockets and the original chains were in good shape, all aligned, no rust. I suppose you could have custom sprockets made, but there may be a problem getting the small ones, which may be welded to the drive shafts, changed out without remortgaging the house.

I restored this one 2yrs? ago. My sprockets are good but I was just wondering if anyone had thought of or done this. Right now I'm stripping a Noma 1033 for redo.

Bit of an old post, but I have thought about it. I wouldnt call it a weak spot in the design, because these machines can suffer a lot of abuse and not shear, but as these machines age, thise teeth wear down... especially when people dont clean & re-grease the chain after every season. When the gear teeth wear down too much, the chain will slip under heavy load and that's when the teeth shear. Every "parts" one Ive seen with shreaded gears had very worn teeth.

If you reconfigure the sprocket sizes, you "could" speed up the 1st stage's intake speed, but the 2nd stage would still be limited and you would need to re-examine the components because you'd be going from lightweight aluminum to steel and it would require the aluminum shafts to be changed over to steel... might wreak havoc with balancing and weight transfer in the 2nd stage's bearings.
