Hello & thank you for taking the time to read my thread.

I purchased my first snowblower last year, a brand new 28" Craftsman 247.883951 & used it maybe 10 times for 15-30 minutes each. I completely forgot to drain the fuel before summer storage but it was just about empty so the first fuel up this year was easily 90-95% total capacity.

I assumed with the limited use last year, I wouldn't have to worry about the fuel filter, spark plug, etc. I did give it a once over & checked oil which was good to go.

We had a late start to winter this year so I didn't pull it out until 3 weeks ago. First run was about 30 minutes & it ran flawlessly. The second run about a week later ran well for about 20 minutes then started sputtering like it was low on fuel with plenty in the tank. I was just about done anyway so I parked it in the covered shed I store it in.

After sitting for another week, I just went out & fired it up as I always have before per manual spec. & immediately the idle went far higher than it ever has on full speed. I immediately dropped idle speed to minimum which killed the engine. I fired it back up, high idle again, dropped the idle speed down once more but before the engine died, I increased it slightly & it started idling just as high as before.

I did some searching online but haven't found anything referencing a fix for this specific issue. Plenty things worth trying like jets, throttle cable, etc. but figured it best to get some opinions from a forum before tearing into it. I've worked on a fair amount of vehicle/snowmobile/four wheeler/dirt bike motors but never anything this small or this type. Don't want to fly in blind-ish.

Any & all help would be greatly appreciated. My back just can't handle shoveling for any length of time & it snows a lot here. Thank you!

That should have a Model #952Z478-SUB Mtd engine. The blower is an MTD built for Sears.

I'd drain the gas from the tank and also remove the carb's float bowl in case any water has settled in there. Being careful not to tear the gasket. Not sure if that engine might have an actual drain on the bowl, some do where you don't need to remove the bowl to drain. Start with fresh fuel, non-E10 if it's available.
If you have any carb cleaner I'd try spraying the outside linkage and some inside the carbs throat at the throttle plate and shaft in case it's gummed up a bit. Try spraying while working the linkage through it's range. Let dry and see if that helps.

Drain the gas from the tank and bowl in to a plastic soda bottle. The gas should be clearish. If there is water in the gas, it will sink to the bottom.
