Hey there, new to the forum and looking forward to hear what you say!

I have a older Noma 523 on tracks, I bought it off a guy who was having troubles with it and I thought I could fix it up and have a solid blower. Unfortunately not the case. It had no compression so I replaced the head gasket and now has 160psi?? I replaced the carb and still having the same issue. It will fire a few times and die, hit the electric start and fires a few times and dies again. Has strong spark and spark plug looks like its in good shape. Where do I look next? does that compassion seem abnormal high?

Welcome to SBF Mike. Did you happen to check the valve clearances before changing the head gasket? If the clearance is to big on the exhaust valve, the cam shaft has a compression release that slightly opens the exhaust valve to lower the compression for easier starting.


If the clearance is in the .006 thousandths range, it is ok. If the clearance is around .015, the compression release won't activate. Another possibility, the camshaft has a broken compression release and isn't making starting easier.


I'm guessing that a good compression reading, with a good compression release and valve clearances would be around 60 psi?

Thanks for the help! Turns out the fly wheel key was broken and the timing was off just a bit so I would not stay running. Now to figure out why it broke.. when I try to pull it over there is a lot of resistance, so I will check the valve clearance and go from there. Also the governor seems to be non existant, doesn’t matter how it is set it will over rev everytime. I’m almost thinking something is wrong with the cam shaft/ internal governor parts. Any thoughts? Appreciate the feed back!

For 99.00, just slap a Predator on there and be done with it …. :)

Unless he has a two shaft engine, which is quite possible on an older machine.

A sheared flywheel key on a snow blower motor is pretty RARE. The seller may have tried fixing the motor and never torqued the flywheel nut to correct spec or the valves being out of adjustment caused a backfire and it sheared.
