Hey, long time lurker, but have a question I couldn't find in previous postings

I have an older Baycrest snowblower with an HM80 tecumseh that broke its recoil. I ordered a replacement recoil listed as fitting "OHH50 OHH65 OHH60 HM80 HM90 HM100", which was similar to other postings that seemed to suggest recoils for any HM80 tecumseh's shared the same recoil. Apparently this isn't true, and the starter came, and the teeth do not reach far enough into the engine-side "cup" to spin the engine.

So my question is, are recoils not standardized for tecumsehs across models under the general "HM80" designations? Or is my old baycrest an abnormality? Or is there a way to adjust the "cup" outwards to match the new starter?

Thanks

There are Different Length Starter Cups that Correspond with the Different Recoils.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm going to say this based on my observations of 7-10HP TEC motors. The older ones from the 70's, these are the ones with the magneto inside the flywheel and the magnets glued onto the inside of the flywheel. The recoil starter, starter cup, most of that stuff interchanges. You can use a 8 HP muffler on a 10 HP if you dimple the carb cover a little in one spot.

The newer ones with the magneto mounted off the cylinder fins over the flywheel and the magnet is mounted in a slot on the outside of the flywheel have a different recoil starter and starter cup.

Though there have been changes, I believe the gas tank, carb, muffler and electric starter will interchange between them as long as you have the right mounting hardware. You do have to watch as there are 2 different lengths of crankshafts in them. I cannot say if you could switch the starter cup, recoil and flywheel cover between older vs. newer ones or not, I don't know.

That's the best I can cover your recoil question and other parts you might want to swap. Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. Hopefully I can contribute some knowledge back to the community in time as i'm now in deep deficit in that regard

I took some pictures of my new recoil assembly and what's left of the old one.

Hopefully that captures the spirit of my problem. I'd like to avoid having to change the cup, as finding replacements for anything on this Baycrest has been trial and error so far, but if there are no other options available i'll look in to that.

Thanks for the offer Jack. Sending you a PM
