My snowblower is a Snapper I5240 but from youtube videos of various brands the belt tensioning systems are similar. The drive/traction belt tensioner seems to have excessive side to side movement. I replaced both the drive and auger belts. The auger belt tensioner is adjustable. The drive belt tensioner is NOT adjustable. I was hearing a scraping noise
and noticed that the drive belt tensioner wheel was striking one of the bolts that secures the belt guards......this bolt is not moveable. I'm wondering if the spring that attaches to the arm that the drive belt tensioner wheel is attached to has weakened. Also, the drive belt tensioner wheel can not be adjusted on it's arm.
Weakened spring or maybe something got bent during my maintenance work?

I will bet dollars to donuts that you will find the bracket that holds the drive tensioner pulley has worn where it connects to the frame, thus repositioning the pulley away from its intended path of operation.

I have seen this on 2 machines I own, and have corrected one by welding material back on the rod of the bracket where it goes into the frame and grinding it down to its intended original state. The other I just corrected by adding a washer and lubed that area.

You also sometimes can tweak the bracket by bending it slightly, or possibly add washers, if room, at the idler location.

That is all mute if the idler has a spent bearing.

Standing in front of the auger bucket, the drive tensioner pulley's direction of travel is side to side. A spring pulls the tensioner pulley toward the left which applies tension to the drive belt. There is a little too much travel toward the right and the pulley is rubbing against a bolt head which is toward the right. I was guessing that this excessive rightward travel might be due to a weakened spring?

LOL …. very true, I have not bought donuts in some time … I do like my pumpkin pie and strawberry rhubarb pie though … :)

I better get back to my paint prep on my 10M4, … I am getting hungry …:)
