Used Ariens or New Toro

1534 Views 24 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  CCMoe
Hello everyone,
I’m looking to buy a snowblower as my new house has a substantially bigger driveway compared to my last.

I’m fine with doing maintenance on items, so buying used doesn’t bother me. Around my area right now there is:
- 2015 Ariens 28 Deluxe 414CC model for $1000
Automotive tire Motor vehicle Hood Automotive lighting Automotive design

Automotive tire Automotive design Motor vehicle Gas Engineering

- Demo model Toro Powermax 828 HD for $1699 from the dealership

- Another Toro Powermax 828 HD private sale for $1500, but it is practically brand new
Tire Wheel Automotive tire Tread Toy

Automotive tire Motor vehicle Automotive design Bumper Vehicle
Tire Wheel Vehicle Hood Automotive lighting

- Ariens 2020 28 Deluxe SHO for $2000

Looking for recommendations on what I should do here or if I should hold out for a better offer.

Also, I am in Canada and we get a large amount of wet and heavy snow where I am to.

My vote is for the Deluxe 28 with the 414 engine. I have 2 Ariens 28" blowers and nothing stops them. Although my Deluxe is powered by the Predator 420 I am sure the one you are looking at with that big 414cc will get the job done and that's the one that will save you a few bucks over the other 2 blowers. Nothing wrong with the others by the way.

The 414cc deluxe 28 is a killer machine. You said you get a lot of heavy snow so there is no such thing as too much power. It looks well taken care of by the pics also. That would be my choice.

Seems like either will fill the bill nicely.

I would go with the Deluxe 28 with the 414.
It looks to be in good condition in the pics, but you need to give it a good going over in person to confirm.
Buyers market for the next 6 months on used machines.

Here’s the issue and I am going to be as non biased as possible. Reading over this thread everyone who recommends the ariens owns one. That’s a bias opinion it’s circular reasoning and it’s a fallacy. It doesn’t mean ownership of a Ariens is bad you are getting a bias opinion. For me I would subjectively look at the individual features each one offers. What you like about each one, and what you don’t like about each one. New vs used. Three features of toro that I love. 1 no shear pins On my street only one person owns a orange painted snow blower and every time he’s clearing his driveway he’s changing a shear pin. 2nd feature I like is the quick stick don’t have to hand crank the chute. 3rd is the anti clog feature heavy wet snow no problem. If there’s a fourth reason I like Toro is the customer service from my dealer.

Its no bias 414cc vs 265cc not even 8 hp the 828 ariens clears 20 or 30% more tons per
a free to 30 dollar impeller kit ends the discussion
the toro anti clog makes the machine blow snow twice thats why it clears 20 to 30% less per hr
my 28 414 sho pulley impeller kit 3850 rpm will clear as much or more then a stock ariens 30 sho
that special edition ariens with the 414 will run circles around that toro its not close
Ariens cust service is top notch my machine is used so not orig owner they sent me the light shield and a replacement gas cap free including shipping in 3 days 2 separate times the last being last yr on a 7 yr old machine .
30 bucks for the sho pulley and a home made impeller kit my 414 would out clear the top of the line 1428 toro

The 414cc deluxe 28 is a killer machine.
I have a great fondness for the LCT 414cc engine; after my Honda GX240 & GX390, likely the best engine I have ever owned. Always starts on one pull and runs smoothly within seconds of the choke lever being flipped to Off.

The reasons I recommended the Deluxe 28 compared to the other Toro and Ariens machines are the price, the great condition and most importantly the 414cc engine.
If it had been a Toro in similar condition and price with a significantly more powerful engine than the other machines, I would have recommended it.

My recommendation to someone who is looking for a new snow blower on this forum is always to check them out in person, get hands on them, compare build quality and ergonomics of the controls, different features. Wheel them around the show room or parking lot etc. I also suggest they check out Ariens, Toro and Honda machines depending on their budget.

Everyone is different and has different opinions and likes and dislikes.

The first 2 points that you love about Toro, I don't like.
I have only broke 1 shear pin in 45 years of blowing snow and it makes sense to me to have a sacrificial shear pin to protect the auger gear box.
I had an MTD machine with a joy stick chute control, it was awful. I did check out the Toro machines before I bought my Ariens, I didn't like it. I preferred the simple bullet proof crank design.
I don't doubt that your machine doesn't clog in wet heavy snow, mine doesn't either.
I agree good customer service from your dealer is definitely a bonus and selling feature, glad you found a good one, but all brands have good and bad dealers.

Don't assume that just because someone is recommending the same brand of machine that they own it is biased. I have recommended Toro machines over Ariens before when the Toro was the best machine/deal of the ones he was looking at.

I would make the exact same recommendation for the same reasons. In the snowblower game, you want the largest engine for the width of the machine possible.

Cheers

Ariens for me. That 414cc will be a monster. Don't even bother thinking of Toro.

I'd offer them $800 cash today. Is that a private sale?
Where in Canada are you located?

I’m in Newfoundland and he is firm on the pricing. It’s a secondary blower so he said he’ll keep it before selling it for any less as he has no rush to get rid of it.

Yeah being on "The Rock" will keep prices steady. I'd buy it if you needed a blower.

Nothing wrong with the Toro's. But for me the 414cc engine is a game changer when comparing that lineup.

I look at it this way, you can always run the throttle at a slower speed and still plow snow plenty well. That's what I do with my 420cc.

Actually no assumptions are made. It’s called a like bias everyone has 25 cognitive biases one is the like bias and then there’s the dislike bias. They are very hard to avoid. Even if we do our best to avoid them it still comes out I am guilty of it.
