Today I was adjusting the belt keeper (Ariens calls them fingers) on my 2017 Ariens Deluxe 24 (921045). No problem loosening the bolts holding the keeper in place and got the keeper set with the proper clearance to the belt (1/8" or less and not touching the keeper). Loosely tightened down one bolt, then moved to the second one and got it snugged down, but not tight. Went back to the first bolt and snugged it down to hold the keeper in place. Then back to the second bolt which I started snugging down and suddenly it let go before it was even snug. Seems to have stripped the threads in the block.

Now I'm looking for a heli-coil kit to repair it. The Ariens part document shows the bolt that holds the finger/keeper as a .31-24 x .75 GR5 bolt. Is a 5/16-24 the correct heli-coil kit to use or do I need to go to a larger size? Any cautions or helpful info that one of you can provide?

Measure the depth of that hole that is stripped. I did the same thing to two Tecumseh engines (both on the same sise as yours) and I believe there was as extra 1/4 or so of threads so I just went with a longer bolt. You can test my theory by threading in the bolt by hand, without the keeper, to see how far that will go in.

Thanks for the idea of using a longer bolt. I kind of wondered about that, so will check out the threads with the washers off of the bolt.

Just a follow up to what I've done to get things back together.

RIT333's suggestions to see if the original bolt would screw in tight without the belt keeper in place and not using the washers worked out as he said. But before I tried that I filed three thin longitudinal slots on the bolt and used it as a tap to chase the threads in the block. Then went to the local small engine repair shop and picked up a 1" long 5/16-24 bolt and used it to put things back together. Seems to be working OK. Might have been able to use a 1 1/4" bolt as well.

I also bought two bolts in case I have trouble with the other bolt in the future.
