What exactly does the worm shaft tube Do? Is it supposed to protect or something? Act like a spacer maybe?

Are you referring to the shaft coming from the motor and V belts with the enclosed worm gear to spur gear gearbox that powers the cross augers in the cross auger housing?

This tube carries the propeller shaft that has the worm gear to the gear box that contains the worm gear and the spur gear that is used to rotate the cross augers.

Using chain drive for the cross auger halves with an exterior chain drive is simpler and reduce the amount of flexing of the cross auger housing as the impeller does not have to contend with the stress loading created by the worm to spur gear gearbox.

So should it move? If it supports the worm shaft than I feel like it should be fixed on both ends.

Hello Money man,

nope it should not move, the gearbox and shaft should be bolted to the cross auger housing through an upper and or lower piece of metal of some thickness to the underside of the roof portion of the cross auger housing and the bottom of the cross auger housing depending on the brand.

My worm shaft tube can move about an inch back and forth between the impeller and the gearbox. I guess I need a new one? It's just laying on the shaft.

If you have that much play on the worm gears shaft tube you have a brood herd of issues as it has slipped off or unscrewed from either the worm gear box or the point where it is or should anchored in the engine compartment.

I have to leave now but the other fine members of the board will be more than willing to help if you can post a few pictures or tell us the brand name and how old the snow blower is and the serial number if you have it handy but a picture will help us much faster to help us help you if the snow is not encrusted in and around the gearbox and tube.

Your gearbox may have a set screw to hold the tube in place and it may have backed off and lost its grip on the tube.

The other worry is how much gear oil you have left in the gearbox so keep that in mind as these units use a splash lubrication system.

Sure it will protect against rust a little but I think it is more as a spacer for the person on the assembly line putting it together prior to installing in the machine so impeller is properly positioned in housing.

So I'm tearing mine apart to replace some gearbox internals and the worm shaft. Should I bother to buy a new tube?

Not mission critical, just note about where impeller is aligned to discharge chute and fine tune impeller position before tightening set screw when reinstalling. Some manuals advise to butt impeller against bearing however some fore and aft movement of worm shaft even on new machines is detectable is the best advice I can give.
