Definitely not a very handy person here. I have a 8HP Yard Machines 24 inch snowblower Snow King powered by Tecumseh. The Model number is MTDAS6FEE729.

Put it away last year and everything was ok. Went to start and both the electic start and the recoil start are frozen. When you try the electric start all you get is a low hum. Recoil rope will not pull at all.

Tried removing spark plug and putting a little oil in without any luck. Still can't pull rope or get starter to work.
Believe I bought this unit in 2004 or 2005. Have changed oil and spark plug every year. That is only maintenance I have ever performed.
Before I look at buying a new snow blower, what simple things can I try?

Check the oil level, is it full or near full ?

Spray some penetrating oil in the cylinder and let it sit for an hour or two and then pull the belt cover and use a breaker bar with a socket to turn the crankshaft with the plug still out.

It sounds like somehow the piston rings seized to the cylinder.

Remove the belt cover and see if you can rotate the auger pulley counter clockwise, easier with spark plug removed. If you cannot move it then remove the recoil starter, only 3 or 4 bolts or nuts and should pull out. Pull the rope and see if the short arms come out of the housing and return when you release the rope. Only needs a small amount of movement. Next look at the flywheel ring gear and see if the electric starter cogs are jammed with the flywheel teeth.

If all looks ok then try to turn the flywheel clockwise, its larger diameter should make turning easier. If it will not budge then you have an internal engine problem.

Will the engine turn at all when you have the spark plug removed? From your description, I'm not sure if you tried that. If it still won't turn with the plug removed, I'd agree with removing the electric starter, and trying again. I'd keep the spark plug removed for that test, as a way to eliminate a possible source of problems.

Do you live in a really humid/salty environment? I've heard people talk about taking measures to avoid cylinder-rust during the off-season. But I've never done those things (like fogging the cylinder with oil, and/or ensuring both valves are closed during storage), and I've never had an engine bind up from sitting around. That doesn't mean it can't happen, of course.

Any chance mice or something made a nest someplace, jamming up the flywheel, as an example?

No engine won't turn with spark plug removed. I'm going to try and remove the starter. Also, in PA so not a humid or salty environment. Have never had problem with mice, but doesn't mean it couldn't be first time.

Like I said in first post, not very handy but willing to learn. Is there anything that I should watch out for when taking off the electric starter. Of course, I won't have it plugged in. Can it be under any "load" since it may be jammed. Better said is could it want to spin or anything else spin when I try to take it out. Just want to make sure I don't have any safety issues I need to worry about.

With the spark plug removed, I think you would have eliminated any sources of pent-up energy that's waiting to be released. So I don't think anything would try to spin.

Out of curiosity, with the spark plug removed, what happens if you try to turn the impeller? Preferably with a stick or something, so your hands aren't in there.

The bendix or gear has a spring and if it's stuck out when you loosed it up the gear should get pushed back into the retracted position. This would all happen under the flywheel cover and you wouldn't have your fingers in there (you shouldn't). You'd just be removing the three or four bolts holding it in place.

Oil is filled to proper level.
Took off electric starter, took off recoil starter. Once off unit, recoil rope pulls fine and goes back in place
Tried to turn flywheel with no luck

I put in some Liquid Wrench.
Now here is my dumb question as I know nothing about engines.
Once I take off the belt cover, what kind of socket do I use on the crankshaft to try and free with a breaker bar?

since you have the flywheel exposed, try a socket on that nut. remember to turn it clockwise, and dont go gorilla on it !

What he said. I would try to go in both directions to see if there is some play. Hard to think the connecting rod broke as you shut it off last use but usually when an engine is seized it's from sitting for a long time or water getting in there and the rings rusting to the cylinder wall or the connecting rod breaking and jamming itself. If it's the connecting rod usually it will have a little forward, backward motion.
