Anyone have luck replacing the pinion gear for a JQ170-2 starter motor. Appears to be 15 tooth. From a 291cc LCT snowblower motor. Original fractured apart, rest of the starter functions like brand new.

Ariens uses LCT engines so I was looking there. Are you sure it isn't 14 teeth?

wow. I would inspect the fly wheel gear teeth and make sure they are ok. if they are just some burrs on it, you may be able to clean them up with a file.

I have changed a few of those .. the most difficult part is the "C" ring clip usually holding it in place ... as mentioned, you probably want to inspect the flywheel.

Note: They actually make a tool for the end C clip, but I dont do enough to merit buying it.

Ditto, I thought the same... A picture sure helps. Never saw one of those broken before. What's the outside diameter of the splined shaft and how many splines? What's the approximate outside diameter of the broken 15T gear? I've attached a brief summary on spur gears. Maybe we can match it to something...

Sadly, you may need to buy the whole starter ($40-60):
