Hello,

I'm new to these forums. I have this old Atlas 27 inch dual stage snow thrower that I really don't have any info on. It was given to me two years ago by a relative with engine issues. Come to find out the orginal engine was blown. This year I finally decided to swap a predator engine on to it and use it as everything else seems to be in good working order. After the swap I noticed the auger is spinning even when not engaged. The belt appears too tight and also possibly too thick for the pulleys. Leading me to believe these belts may not be the original for this machine. Considering they are old and worn I'd like to replace them anyhow but I'm not positive the correct sizes. Looking for any information that would help me find the belts I'm looking for.

Nice looking machine ...

The snowblowers I have , had, and worked on usually are either 3/8 wide or 1/2 inch wide. Lengths can vary.

I use only the Gates PoweRated, or the D&D Kevlar belts.

I would take the belt now with you , to measure up a new one. You can also take a cloth tape measure and measure around the pulleys, allowing slack and tension for the idler.

Measure the old belt with a rope and look for a belt that's .3 to .5" longer than the old belt. Is the idler pulley for the auger belt adjustable? Does it use a cable or rod for the auger engagement? You may be able to adjust the tension that way as well.

Also, it looks very similar to a Snow Chief, which would have been sold at True Value hardware stores back in the day.

Welcome . . .

I too send my best wishes regarding your relative's engine issues. 😆

I suspect that the crankshaft of the new engine is sitting a bit higher than the original engine, and therefore the belts are a bit tighter. (which Predator did you get? 212cc or the 301cc ?)

It is going to be a bit of trial/error, but try a belt size that is 1 up from the current belt. (1/2" or 1" in length is a typical increment)

Did the original pulleys fit in the Predator? The machine looks pretty new/lightly used. (y)
