Neighbor gave me a 522 for fixing his newer blower which needed a carb. The 522 ran, but needed new paddles and a scraper.

As soon as I started taking it apart it broke to pieces.

The bolts spun off as well because they were so rusty. Had to cut the stuck bolts off the threaded plates with an angle grinder (cutting disk) and drill out the holes. New bolts, washers and nuts and it's as good as new.

Also put in a new spring for the belt tensioner. Drilled a small hole at red arrow for one end of the spring. You can see the old spring right below the new one. Tried replacing the belt while it was apart, but the new one was too small. Old belt is a little cracked, but we'll see how it goes.

Fixed a sloppy axle hole

with a bolt after grinding down one side of the head so it fits perfectly. Wheel held it in place. Other side needed a smaller bolt.

I also put a bushing in the one plastic wheel that was wobbly, but I don't have a picture of that.

Bushing: $3 from Menard's
Paddles: $74 - Amazon
Scraper: $26 - Amazon
Spring: $1.50 in pack of 4 from Amazon
Misc bolts, lock nuts & washers

Total about $115. If it didn't run so good and start so easily, I might not have fixed it. Machine is going to a widowed neighbor who asked me to throw her snow this year. I believe her son can help her get this started and do the job themselves.

Hardest part was putting the new paddles on. Hard to reach some of the bolts and line up the holes in the plates, etc.

First time for me on one of these. Learned a lot. Thoughts?

Thanks. The weird thing is the paddle order from a reseller through Amazon was wrong in terms of count. They sent me 4 paddles instead of 2. I've told them about this so we'll see what they say. Their packer needs to be educated - it's 2 son, not 4.

Starts first pull with full choke which can be pushed in after about 10 seconds. Here it is all ready to go to it's new owner.
