Toro 720e - Gas spewing from this hose

Hello everyone,
I have a question about a hose (see image). I wanted to run my Toro 720e to make sure all was good before winter hits.
Here’s the sequence of events:
  1. Tank was empty, so I filled with just enough to get it to run.
  2. Primmed and pulled and everything started just fine.
  3. Then I noticed a tiny amount of smoke that went away quickly and then gas started leaking from a hose. Now I will say, the gas looked dirty, to my surprise, considering the tank was empty and I filled with new gas.
  4. Turned off snowblower and saw a line was not attached to anything on one end.
  5. Took the housing and trim prices off to assess the situation, but for the life of me, cannot see where this line would attach.
  6. Looked over everything, and the rest of the machine visually looks fine. I’m not an engine guy, but it appeared that there were no cracks anywhere and the lines were snug, accept for the one in question
So, what is this line and where does it hook to? Is this a symptom of something else wrong with the machine?

That looks like the breather from the valve cover. Did you check the oil? I have a feeling the float stuck open or leaked and filled the crank case with gas, this would make what was coming out of the hose look dirty. I would not run it any more thinking the the oil is thinned out with gas. If this is the case the level in the crank case being too high would force it out the breather, and could blow the seals out.

That breather tube should be venting to the atmosphere, so leave it alone:

The next course of action would be to fix the stuck float and/or needle situation as mentioned by @Beanhead above.

Otherwise, gas will continue to enter the crankcase again soon after you change the oil. Once the fuel issue has been resolved, change the oil.

Sounds like you’re on the right track. One thing I added to all my machines with bowl type carbs is a fuel shut off valve. Prevents a stuck carb float from doing this or leaking gas all over the garage….

Yep just pick up a Briggs & Stratton shut off valve they even come with hose clamps. Put one on my Toro snow blower & one on my Briggs pressure washer. My Briggs generator came with one as did our Suzuki DF 2.5 outboard.
