Choke/Run knob alignment issue

I just bought an Ariens 30” SHO Platinum (921064) and noticed that the choke knob isn’t properly aligned with the sticker on the motor that indicates “Choke” or “Run”. When the knob is turned fully to the right, the arrow on the knob points to “Run” instead of “Choke”. In order for it to point to “Choke” on the sticker, I would have to be able to turn the knob much farther to the right, which I can’t. When the knob is turned fully to the left, the arrow on the knob points to nothing, when it should be pointing to “Run”. So, it’s really an alignment issue with the knob.

The problem is that you can’t adjust the knob to have it point to Choke when it is turned fully to the right since it attached to a flat control arm. As such you can only flip it 180 degrees, which doesn’t address the issue.

So my question….is it possible to “easily” change the position of the control lever such that when the knob is attached to it that it correctly points to the Choke and Run positions?

Thanks

If you just bought the machine, visit the dealership and look at another one. This is probably just an adjustment issue - maybe a cable inside the housing? Your dealer should make it right. Unfortunately, the guy with the least seniority (experience) gets to do the boring jobs and maybe he sets up the machines.

I agree, post a picture - preferably more than just showing the lever and knob. What's the lever control?

The problem is that the dealer is over 30 miles away and I would have to get a trailer and tow it up there, which I don't want to do if its an easy fix.

And yes, this is an alignment issue. Just don't know how to correct it.

I did stop into Lowes last night and looked at the knobs on theirs. They looked fine, The sticker with Run/Choke was in the same position as mine and the knob correctly referenced the proper setting for Run and Choke unlike mine. They had a Deluxe 24 and 28 on the floor so it doesn't appear that the control knob setup is different for my model.

Here are the images..

This is knob turned to the far right. Should be pointing at "Choke"

This is a pic with the knob removed. You can see how the exposed lever control is just a flat piece of metal that knob slips on to, so you can't manually adjust the position of the knob to point it to where you want. It only does on two ways.

There are 2 red knobs, one for choke and the other for the fuel shut off. They are not the same, one center fitting for the metal tongue is 90 degrees different to the other.

If your fuel shut off knob is aligned correctly then you need a new choke knob. The later models have an arrow on the top ridge for the choke while the fuel shut off knob just says fuel on the side of the center ridge.

I have a couple of LCT-made engines lying around, so I went to take a look. On both engines, when the choke knob is in the fully closed position, the choke shaft (the one that is on the carb that peeks out past the heater cover), is in the ~2 o'clock position.

Conversely, when the choke knob is in the fully open position, the choke shaft is roughly at the 12 o'clock position:

Does your choke butterfly valve fully open and close correspondingly with the knob? How many clicks does it take to go from fully open to fully closed, and vice versa? It's typically 3 clicks.

If it does not, then perhaps your choke butterfly disk is binding against the carburetor body due to a manufacturing defect. You won't know for sure until you remove the carburetor cover, which you may or may not want to do on a new machine when it's under warranty.

You know full open is full counter clockwise and full choke is full clockwise.

I too like things to be correct, but I probably wouldn't bother with this.

I'd hesitate to start wrenching on a warranted machine until I'd checked with the dealer. Thirty five miles +? I'd drive over there, show their mechanic your pictures, have lunch, look at the toys in the showroom, and come home. He just might pull the shroud off a similar machine and show you what to check.

Alternatively, you might find an exploded parts diagram for your model machine online and that will show if there is a linkage that can be adjusted (or turned around).

Edit: With all the bolts and pieces to that shroud, I think getting under it is going to take a fair amount of disassembly. If you can borrow the trailer, I'd talk to the dealer, maybe you can make an appt. so you can drive there with the snowblower and they can fix it while you wait.

You would do all of that, including borrowing a trailer because a knob doesn't line up with a sticker on a choke control?
I'm guessing 3 hours time minimum to do all of that.

Add the cost of gas, etc ..... as I mentioned, I would just move the sticker to proper alignment = time 2 minutes, cost 0

@jjscott13 I agree with @Oneacer the sticker for the choke is not positioned correctly. Here are some pics of my 2015 Platinum that is the same setup as my 2022 Pro:

The above pic shows the carb choke mechanism.

The above pic shows the choke in the off position.

The above pic shows the choke in the full choke position.

Note in the pics that the position of the choke knob is the same as your pics of the choke knob but the sticker is positioned differently. It is much too low and does not follow the contours of the knob.

Photo from Ariens website on the left.
Sticker placement looks to be similar.
The knob/indicator is well past the "RUN" position just like your machine.

For myself, as long as it works I wouldn't worry about it but I get that some people want things "properly aligned". In that case I'd get my wife's hair dryer to warm up the sticker, peel it off and move it, maybe adding a touch of glue to keep it in place.

This is definitely in the category of what they call a "first world problem".

I see he has not been back, but I will add that I bought a platinum 24 SHO in the summer of 2020. I had the chance to stop at the Ariens museum and a lady there gave me a number to call to get the engine badging that was missing. they are sending me the entire sticker kit for free. It come with all the labels for choke, throttle and engine sizes. 420,414,369 and 306. I only need the 369. They had all my information because I had registered it, the number is 1 877 291 7294.
